Living
in a Listed Building

For day-to-day living, listing is not restrictive
Anchor Cottage is a Grade II listed property and also sits within the Haslemere Town Centre Conservation Area. Far from being a burden, this status is largely a mark of distinction: it confirms the building’s special character as part of the historic heart of Haslemere.
For day-to-day living, the listing is not restrictive. Most internal decoration, routine maintenance, and the kinds of improvements that make a house comfortable to live in can be carried out freely. The protections focus mainly on preserving the features that contribute to the town’s historic identity – especially the external appearance that gives Lower Street its charm.
Consent is certainly required for major alternations and in relation to visible or structural changes, such as:
- alterations to the roofline, chimneys, or external walls
- replacing or significantly altering doors and windows
- extensions, porches, or conservatories
- changes to external materials such as render, timber, or roof tiles
- adding satellite dishes, solar panels, or new signage
But in practice, this means that as long as works are sympathetic to the building’s character, change is possible. Many owners of listed homes make successful updates, from modern kitchens and bathrooms to sensitive extensions.
The conservation area framework is not designed to prevent progress, but to ensure Haslemere’s historic character remains intact for future generations - which is great news.
In short, Anchor Cottage does not come with unnecessary restrictions – only the reassurance that its historic appeal will be carefully preserved.
